Preparing for your Counseling Session
In order to make the best use of your time during a counseling session,
read the following recommendations before coming to your session.
- Write out the main reason(s) that you are seeking counseling
- Write out the goals you have for your counseling session
- Bring pertinent information (such as names and phone numbers
of any other treating physicians or professionals, a list of
medications you are taking and emergency contact information)
- Ask the counselor how much time you will have in your session
(for example, some counselors offer 45 minute sessions while
others offer 50 or 60 minute sessions). Sherry Collier's standard
counseling session is 60 minutes in length with 90 minute
sessions available upon request.
- List any specific questions you have for your counselor about the
types of treatment offered or about other resources in the
community that may be helpful.
- The basic rule of thumb is to prepare for your session by giving
forethought to how you want to discuss the specific challenges for
which you are seeking counseling. This will allow you and your
counselor to make the most of your session time.
